The Mask

The Mask

The face denies the feelings with a smile;
the years of suffered loss bring less relief.
Today reminds of gas mask worn awhile
by firemen-stunned below the Tower’s grief.

The smile denies the memory recalled:
that day they ran, white-faced, along the street.
Their skin and hair turned ashen, ag`ed all,
that day they ran, white-haired, along the street.

I turn away but looking back, I see
those wary, stricken eyes behind their mask;
those charging masses mid their destiny
yet bravely are they equal to the task.

The faces of New Yorker made me proud:
with weathered soul, such courage and unbowed!

The word: MASK

Definition 3 a : a protective covering for the face
b : gas mask
c : a device covering the mouth and nose to facilitate inhalation
d : a comparable device to prevent inhalation of infective material
e : a cosmetic preparation for the skin of the face that produces a tightening effect as it dries.  My form:  the Shakespearean Sonnet, rhyme scheme: abab;cdcd;efef;gg.  Meter : iambic pentameter.
